A long-range study by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst says construction of the Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville brought significant economic benefits to the region.

Researchers at the Social and Economic Impacts of Gambling Massachusetts found that PPC construction created 1,286 net new jobs, $104.4 million in net new personal income and $121.8 million in net new economic activity in the state, primarily in Bristol and Norfolk Counties.

The study found that between $176 to $186 million in annual revenue appears to come in the “new money” from keeping casino patrons in Massachusetts. Researchers estimate that the casino’s construction has spurred an additional $72.4 million in economic activity in Bristol and Norfolk Counties, and $326.3 million in the Metro Boston from the casino’s operation.

There was also a modest increase in wages and a slight decrease in the poverty rate in Plainville; but researchers say it’s unclear is this is from the casino.

Researchers also surveyed employees of the slot’s parlor, noting that almost half of respondents said they had previously been unemployed or employed part time. About 75 percent of respondents said they had less than a four-year college year.

“Analyzing casino employment is critical to understanding whether casino employment can be a pathway to economic stability and prosperity for workers,” says lead author Andrew Hall, senior research analyst at the UMass Donahue Institute, in a statement.

“We are investigating these impacts across the state, especially among the most marginalized sectors of the population,' Hall said. 'The new employee survey gives us insight into casino employees’ experience on the ground: why they’re seeking employment in this new field, what types of walks of life employees come from, their aspirations and how casino employment fits into their career goals, and their interest in training and career advancement.”

Lance George, general manager of Plainridge Park Casino, told regulators on Thursday that the slots parlor took greater hit than it expected to after Encore Boston Harbor opened in June.

George said the slots parlor generated $36 million in the third quarter, about $8.7 million less than the previous year’s third quarter.

Since opening, Encore launched a bus service from Patriot Place to the $2.6 billion Everett resort.

“As we’ve discussed in previous presentations, the property has always anticipated this opening,” George told the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, “and the greater than expected impact to revenue does not materially change our operation.”
